A Call for Volunteers…
When you start with Kindergarteners, you are able to lay foundations. You are able to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses early. You have years to strategize and build a system of support around that student. In an ideal world, all of our students would have started and stayed at Mighty Oak for the entirety of their schooling. A unified system that is able to surround our students with everything they could need. That is not an option we had in the beginning.
When we began supporting students with their online instruction in 2020, we knew we could not afford to take such a conservative approach, we knew we had to do something immediately to make a difference with students who were already years behind in their instruction. We have been able to provide our students with instruction that has jumped them grade levels ahead, but we still need help.
If you read the Love Letter last week, you saw that our oldest group of students, the ones that came to Mighty Oak the latest in their academic careers, still have insecurities in fundamental skills. These insecurities create a vicious cycle, where they don’t feel comfortable enough to ask for help, using behavioral outbursts as distractions that only delay their current learning journey. When you get these students in smaller groups, then it helps the students to be vulnerable enough to ask for and accept help.
This cycle is what we can use your help with. We need volunteers to commit to coming once a week to help support our 8th graders. We don’t need mentors or education specialists. We just need people who are willing to take time once a week to read with students, and to do basic math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. You don’t have to have amazing educational skills, you didn’t have to be the best student in your own academic career. All you need is 30-45 minutes a week to spend with students to help build up their confidence in their fundamental skills. We need your help. Our students need your help. We have to give our students the best shot possible to accomplish their dreams, and we need your help to do that.
We have 11 students in this class, ideally we are looking for 11 volunteers to come once a week to meet with our students to help build their confidence, and bring them up to grade level so they are ready for high school next year. If you have more time during the week and can meet with more than one student while you are here, that would be great also. We have an opportunity to provide support for these students that they would not get anywhere else, but it’s going to take all of us coming together. Hiring another teacher won’t do it in this case, we need our neighbors near and far to come together, to raise their hand and say, I can help with that. We can get these students to where they need to be, ready to learn and grow for the rest of their lives. If you have the time to commit to coming down to Mighty Oak once a week to read with or do math with one of our 8th grade students please either respond to this email, or call us at 502-272-0786 and we can get you signed up to come help.
