Answering Prayers...

Answering Prayers…

There have been 150 years of prayers that have been prayed on Saint Cecilia’s campus. Opened in 1873, I am sure many of those prayers had been for a great community; a great community for the children to grow up in with a beautiful future on the horizon. I know for a fact that our neighbor Ms. Betty, who has spent her whole life in Portland, had been praying for a good school to open in our neighborhood for her nephew to go to. I like to believe that God is using Love City to answer some of those prayers that have been uttered over the past 150 years. Many times, God does use people to help answer the prayers of others, weaving people into one another’s lives for his plan.

Post Covid, the average student is grade levels behind their age. We see this at Mighty Oak as well, but we refuse to accept that this is the new reality, that there is a whole generation of students who it is acceptable to be years behind where they need to be. We refuse to pass kids through, we are a school not a system. So, we uttered prayers of our own, of a city that comes together to help support one another, to help pour their time and talents into helping this generation of students catch up. Over the past couple of weeks, we have gotten to see some of our prayers answered, we have gotten to see individuals step up and commit to catching students up.

This past week, we had volunteers working with students nearly every day. Some of those volunteers work with students one on one, some go on field learning experiences with us. One has agreed to use her 13 years of classroom experience to spend an hour a week teaching our whole 8th grade class grammar and sentence structure. We are still praying for more.

We could still use a volunteer to commit to weekly grammar help on Tuesdays. We could use someone who loves science to spend time each week with our students. We could use math helpers, supporting with basic fractions and decimals. We are especially in need of someone who could help with geometry. We would also love someone who is comfortable with advanced writing, who can help our students who have a passion and talent for writing to hone their abilities and fan the flames of their interest in the subject. You don’t have to commit to teaching a whole class at once, you don’t have to be a math or reading genius, most of our kids need help with the fundamental skills they missed during their formative years of schooling that were disrupted by Covid.

If any of this sounds like something that you would be interested in, email info@lovecityinc.org. We are grateful for everyone who has stepped up to help, but I know there are more people in this city, more people who read this newsletter that have talents to offer up, who want to make a difference in their city, and who want to be the answers to prayers that have been sang over our community for a  century and a half. If you are one of those people, reach out.
