Kingdom Economy...

Kingdom Economy…

The laws of the Old Testament were meant to help establish principles of God’s Kingdom within the nation of Israel. The laws were meant to imbue every aspect of a community with these principles; politics, legal, economic, ceremonial laws were all meant to establish a nation that honored God, one another, and the God created purpose of humans. There were even laws about farming that served this same purpose. Landowners were only supposed to harvest to the edges of their field, leaving the perimeter and the gleanings to the poor, foreigners, and travelers. We even see Jesus and the disciples utilize one of these laws as they were traveling one day, picking a few heads of grain to feed themselves on the journey. The practice of leaving leftovers in the field to be gleaned by the poor actually had a long history, lasting in many parts of the world as recently as a century ago.

The goal of these laws was to turn every activity into one of worship and honor for God and one another. In modern society, God and Kingdom principles are often held apart from one another. Politics, law, economy, and ceremonies have been separated from holding to these Kingdom principles. At Love City we seek to keep these principles in every aspect of what we do. That is why we see Kingdom economy in the things that we do. Kingdom Economy is difficult to explain, but it is easy to see when we look at an example of the journey of one dollar when it enters Love City.

Let’s say that you come to Merriment to buy something. You give us one dollar in exchange for your item. That dollar is going to be paid to a worker at Merriment who is a family member of a student at Mighty Oak. That family member is then going to pay their student’s tuition at Mighty Oak Academy. That dollar of tuition will be paid to one of our teachers, who on their lunch break is going to come over and eat at Porkland. That dollar at Porkland will then go to pay one of our students who is working at the Fish Fry. That student will then return to Merriment to spend their money getting a nice new shirt, and the cycle continues. At some point that dollar will eventually leave the community, but with a network of businesses offering to meet various needs, it gives that dollar more opportunities to stay in the community for longer.

This is just one example. The process can start the moment you donate, buy t-shirts, or order catering. The more micro businesses that Love City can create, the more community businesses that we can inspire to reinvest their money directly back into the community, the longer and longer that we will be able to keep that dollar from leaking out of the community. And the longer that the dollar is in the community, the more chance it has to be used to make a difference in the community. Kingdom Economy can be hard to see, hard to grasp, but when you interact with the community economy of Love City, you can be sure that you are participating in Kingdom Economy.
