Families that Build…
Families are the foundation of community. Families make up the hands that build the community, the feet that walk the community, and the voices that fill that community. This week, we got to see many of those families come together. We are constantly reminding our team that we are building community, not a school, and we will continue to give that reminder as it materializes more and more into the reality.
The week started off with one of our school parents, Willie, bringing the team some homemade jambalaya for lunch one day. While he was there, he heard that we were planning on painting the front porch, he jumped in and told us he would be up with his boys the next day to help. It was beautiful getting to see him jump in and then go on to take time and teach his boys how to do the work. He showed them how to mix the epoxy based coating, how to put the coat down, and how to wait until it cured enough for the next coat. Willie got to spend time with his boys, the boys got to learn something new, and the community got a better looking porch out of it. Things like this happened all throughout the week.
Today, we have four different families coming in to help give the school a deep clean. From a first grader to a seventy year old, all committed to their community getting the best. An extended family member of a Mighty Oak student is a professional carpet cleaner, and they are donating their time on a weekend to come and help deep clean our carpets. It is community.
During the school year, we require families to volunteer two hours a year because of our belief in families building community. But seeing all of the different families come to help us in the summer, to help us build this community, is a new level for us. It reveals more and more of the Kingdom in our neighborhood.
One day, I truly believe that we will get to see a day where everything at Love City is being done by families in the community. It won’t be in a year, or five. It may be twenty or more years before this dream materializes, but it will happen. And this week, has shown great efforts towards that goal. These weeks are the weeks that help give us glimpses into the future, and encourage us to keep moving towards it. One day, this week will seem normal.
