A Week Away...

A Week Away…

The sweet smell of fresh baked cinnamon rolls and blueberry muffins wafting throughout the cafe. The shoes squeaking on the gym floor. The sleepy faces of middle schoolers contrasting the joyful laughter of kindergarteners. It’s a typical Mighty Oak morning, and it’s almost that time again. The first day of Mighty Oak comes next Wednesday. New faces, names, stories, teachers, schedules, a new school year dawns on us. A school year that promises one thing only, amazing stories of the power of Love.

The unique thing about Mighty Oak is that many of us get to see a good amount of students over the summer. All of the students live within two miles of the building. Many families come into Porkland every few weeks to eat. With Merriment open this summer there was another avenue that we were able to see people. Whether I am going to the corner store or the grocery store I am always prepared to hear a “Hi Mr. Ethan”. I ran into one of our second grade boys at Kroger on a particularly hot day. He was wearing no shirt or shoes to help beat the heat when I got sneak attacked with a big sweaty bear hug. He told me all about his summer and trip to Kentucky Kingdom. While it is always a lot of fun to run into the kids and catch up with them over summer like this, there is nothing like the relationships that can be built during the school year.

With a school day being half of a student’s waking hours, their experience in that time frame has such potential to have an impact on them. That is why it is so important to us that we prepare our educators with the tools they need to be able to focus on building relationships with the students. Many of us that live in the neighborhood have great relationships with a lot of the students, but we do not necessarily have the qualifications to be able to educate them. That is one of the beautiful things about Mighty Oak, it is a team effort of helping our educators build those same relationships that we have to be able to allow true, significant learning to take place. To allow the students to feel safe and loved, and to know that what they are being taught will be valuable to them. It is a return to community based education, relationship based education.

Now it starts. All the hard work our team has put into scheduling, planning, facilities, prep comes to the moment of truth. The moment when relationships are built and love is shown. All the fish fry’s and days at the thrift shop, all of the days that you all have showed up to support us at fundraisers or drop off school supplies. This is the moment that you have helped support. So thank you, for helping us be able to start another school year that will be full of Love and full of stories of real community change.
