Sustainability as Community…
If you have followed Love City for awhile, you have probably stopped by for a Fish sandwich on a Friday. What started as a small fundraiser to raise money to pay the LGE bills for after school programs has continued to grow over the years. We take pride in the quality of our service and in creating an inviting atmosphere that brings people from all over the city together. Now it is one of our main regular sustainability measures that we have. It is an event that requires our entire team to pitch in every week to help put on, and it is a beautiful depiction of community.
We have students, teachers, parents, and administrators who all help with the Fish Fry, working side by side to help support their school. This year we wanted to make sure our teachers were able to help out with the Fish Fry’s without having to stay late after a long day of teaching, relieving a teacher each week to be able to come over and help. This helps the whole team and allows our teachers to see more of the community.
We also have a whole group of students who come over directly after school to help and hang out with the team. We have 8 year olds to 13 year olds wiping tables, taking people their food, and helping prep. I always tell the students that one day they will be the ones running the Fish Fry, I will be able to sit down and order dinner and talk with our community while they are the ones that are able to take care of everything. One day they will be the ones working there to help raise money for their own children to go to Mighty Oak. Today that, vision gets one step closer.
One of our students has been asking for an official job at the Fish Fry since she was 11. Yesterday she turned 14, and we were able to officially hire her and schedule her for her first shift when she gets out of school later today. She has been learning about different aspects of the Fish Fry for the past 3 years, and today she gets to join the team.
We are so proud to see this moment come to fruition, proud of her for her desire and interest to work and help support her community. I’ve been working at the Fish Fry’s since I was 16. I have learned so much through working them and built so many great relationships with the conversations that take place when working in the kitchen. I am excited to see the same opportunities for her.
I am excited to see more of our students join our team in the next few years and taking on more responsibilities in their community, whether its working at a restaurant, landscaping, or working with younger students. The more that they step into these roles, the more we will be able to create sustainability within the community. The more we will be able to teach students life skills that they can use in their future professions. Preparing students for future sustainability helps them and our community.
