Thank You for DC!!!

Thank You for DC!!!!

This Love Letter is a thank you for everyone who supported us on our 8th graders trip to DC. Whether you helped us reach our fundraising goal, bought baked goods from our 8th graders, or donated at the Fish Fry, thank you. If you prayed for our journey and safe travels, thank you. It was beautiful to be able to watch the wonder and amazement in the faces of the kids as they experienced the history and beauty of the city. There is really no way that I could possibly do justice with only words to help show you the impact of this trip, so I am going to include many pictures to show you some of these experiences that they got to have on their journey.

The first day in DC was a busy one, seeing memorials, walking around National Mall, visiting the African American history museum, and ice skating at the Washington Harbor outdoor Rink.

The First stop on their journey, the students pose in front of the Lincoln Memorial. They were struck by how big it is.

The second stop of the day was the Jefferson Memorial. Again the kids were struck by the sale of the memorial. We also were able to have a little lesson on how the elements affect certain metals when they noticed and started asking about the patina that was in a couple of spots in the memorial.

After visiting the National Art Museum and African American History Museum we headed over to the outdoor Ice Skating Rink at Washington Harbor. It was all of their first times ice skating. After a bit of a learning curve and a lot of wipeouts, they started to get the hang of it, laughing the entire time, falls and all.

The Second day was a bit more laid back. We went to spend the morning at the Dulles Air and Space Museum where the kids got to see the Discovery Space Shuttle, and then we went out into nature for the kids to see the Potomac waterfall.

Kingston, who wants to be a pilot when he grows up, spending some time on a flight simulator.

The boys in front of a Cessna that they were able to go inside of and explore.

The class in front of the Potomac Falls, one of the largest waterfalls by volume in the US.

Our Third day there we visited the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, where money is printed, the White House, the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl, the Capitol building, and the Library of Congress. Camera access was more restricted in these places so we do not have as many photos from this day.

Hayden in the White House standing under the Presidential Seal.

The students posing in front of our Congressman’s office with our Capitol tour guide who coincidentally was my high school classmate. The kids were shocked by the surprise run in. In the Capitol tour, they were also allowed to enter the House of Representatives and sit in the Representatives seats.

Thank you again for helping support us on this trip. I hope you know how truly thankful we are for everyone supporting this trip for our students. And I hope these pictures and snippets about their adventure help to show our appreciation.
