2024 Last Day of School…
Today is the last day of another school year. It is amazing how quickly they seem to go by. It has been a a year with a lot of learning for us and a lot of elevation of our students. We are so proud of the increase in their evaluations, seeing a huge spike of kids getting caught up onto grade level. It is what encourages us and lets us know that what we are doing is actually working and helping to create change. We had an action packed week to end the year and I wanted to share a few highlights.
Graduation…
Yesterday, we got to celebrate our first Mighty Oak Academy, 8th grade graduation. With families and friends in attendance, it was an emotional and encouraging day for everybody. The six 8th graders we got to watch walk across the stage yesterday came to MOA as 5th graders. We have got to see them grow through the awkward years that middle school can bring. We have seen their confidence grow from not being able to hold a conversation, to each one of them being able to deliver a speech to everyone in attendance. Seen them grow in stature and maturity.
Some of them we have known since they were 7, coming to Love City open gym and camps. We have watched them develop interests in sports, arts, carpentry, and various hobbies. We have seen them grow into community minded students who adhere to the high expectations and academic standards that we hold MOA students too. We have got to watch them learn in a classroom setting, in field experiences, in their community, and in their first jobs throughout Love City for many of them.
During the ceremony we got to hear Shawn’s final message to his 8th grade students, see a video documenting their journeys over the past the year, see them receive their diploma from our administration team, and hear each of their speeches to the rest of the school. Afterwards, we headed over to Porkland to enjoy cake and ice cream as a whole school.
We are so thankful for all of the support, prayers, and encouragement that helped to make this past year possible for our 8th graders. We at MOA are honored to have helped play a small part in their journey. Congratulations 8th graders!! We are all looking forward to watching continued growth throughout your high school career.
Field Day…
My favorite day at school was always field day. A day filled with all types of fun activities that could be mental and physical in nature. It was also a day filled with sweet treats and a fun atmosphere. It is always fun to see the students enjoy field day as much as I always did. It was also beautiful to get to watch our older students help run the snack machines and activity stations for the younger ones. This year they got to have fun with water filled activities and then enjoy some popcorn, sno-cones, and cotton candy.
Merriment Grand Opening…
We have been working this whole year to get Merriment thrift up and running. To offer. our neighbors affordable clothing and create sustainable jobs in the neighborhood. We have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from communities across the city. We are excited to be able to announce that Merriment will have it’s Grand Opening next Thursday, May 30th, and would be thrilled for you to come check out the shop.
