Maturity…
This year, you all have gotten to follow the journey of our 8th grade students. You have gotten to hear about them at their best and worst, the total 180 in behavior from last year, and the incredible maturity they have shown this year. We got to see another one of these beautiful moments last week.
Earlier this year we took the class to a Bats educational day. We were gifted tickets right behind the opposing team’s dugout. The weather was beautiful, the Bats were up, and the seats were great. And then it started… One of the team managers rolled a ball through the opening in the net, on top of the dugout to one of our student’s. Any normal game you go to this would be an awesome thing, but on a school visit day, it was just a bucket of chum thrown into the water. Next thing we know kids are swarming the first row, begging for another ball to be thrown, kids packed shoulder to shoulder, screaming at the top of their lungs, when someone did roll the ball onto the dugout everyone went for it, climbing up and army crawling across. This was reality for the next 8 innings. As the craziness continued, it slowly started to suck the 8th graders in. They began to desire and compete and greed for all of the balls that were coming out. Everyone wanted a ball, multiple balls. As the ushers started to get involved asking kids to stay back, we decided it would be better to move a few rows back to get some separation from all the action .
Last week, we got to take them to another one of the Bat’s Education games. We sat on the second floor where the distraction of the balls was not ever present. The area we were in didn’t get a lot of balls hit that way. Late in the game, one of the fielders caught an out to end the inning, turned, and threw the ball all the way up to where the class was sitting, and the class was so excited to get a ball. They were so happy to have caught one. As we were walking out, the maturity of our student’s was on full display.
On the way back to the car, one of the student’s, Trynton, was admiring the ball he had got. As he passed a 90 year old lady in a wheelchair, he just felt like he should give the ball to her. It moved her to tears. She asked to take a picture with him. After she and her son thanked him profusely, we all got back to the van. As the rest of the class was asking where the ball was and why he had given it up, he just told them that moment felt so much better than catching the ball in the first place. In a week our 8th graders will be our first graduating 8th grade class. And we will be able to proudly speak of the maturity that they have developed and continued to show over the course of this year.
