Education and Fun…
It’s no secret that we expect a lot from our students at Mighty Oak Academy. We value education and the time that we get to spend with our student’s every day. But we also want our students to be excited to come to school and to understand how fun that learning can be. With the weather getting cold and restricting outdoor lessons and activities, we have made an effort to create an environment and events that allow our students and families to still have a good time and celebrate the hard work they have put in this semester.
Recess is an essential part of a school day for our younger students. With pent up energy and social desires there has to be an outlet for them at some point in order to maximize the learning during instructional times. With cold days preventing outdoor play, we made sure to create a space in the basement where this activity could still happen. One of the new options is an indoor gaga pit. Gaga ball is a game that takes place in an octagon where kids pass a ball around and if it touches them under their knee then they are out for that round. We have an outdoor pit in our side yard and it is a staple of their outdoor recess. Seeing a new indoor version was an exciting development for them. An alternative to the indoor gaga pit is a set of Imagination Playground Foam Blocks. These large foam blocks allow kids to build bridges, houses, or anything that they can come up with. These new additions have made indoor recess just as exciting as outdoor recess for our little ones and it has been awesome to see their creativity in utilizing the space.
The school also had fun at our annual end of semester program last Saturday. In this program each class comes up with their own performance. Some classes choose to dance along to a song, others choose to sing, while others put on a skit. It is always fun to watch as they get on stage, with their families in attendance, to show them what they have been working on. This year featured skits, dances, and a poetry reading, and ended with a schoolwide singing of Silent Night that was so beautiful it would make you cry. Following the performance we all went to Porkland for our Cookie Extravaganza where families signed up to bring cookies and drink hot chocolate. It is always a fun day for all of the families at Mighty Oak.
The final event of the semester is an end of semester party featuring face painting, games and an inflatable. This festivity is starting right now and is to reward the students for the hard work they have put in this semester with a day of celebration. Learning is hard, especially when you are getting kids to improve grade levels at a time to catch them up to where they need to be. We want our kids to know that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. And we want to make sure that they do not lose the joy that comes from working hard, learning, and bettering themselves.
