The Newlyweds…
A few weeks ago a young couple came in. They were from Portland, I had seen them around before but had never really talked to them before. But they came in and said “we need some help, we’re getting married and are still looking for some stuff”. Over the next couple of weeks they made multiple stops in, each time getting some things they needed, dresses for their flowergirls, a shirt for the groom, shoes for the bride. If you can’t see the beauty in this story, let me point out some amazing things to you.
First off, Merriment is trusted enough in our neighborhood to provide high quality items at an affordable price. Items that are good enough to be a part of someone’s special day. This is thanks to you all, everyone who has donated to Merriment. You have helped bless our community with an abundance of quality goods. Clothes worn in weddings, boots worn to job interviews, home goods that help make houses feel more homely. Items that have been kept from our community due to an unattainable price point for many. So thank you for your contributions, they are getting beautiful second lives.
The couple was coming in regularly and then I didn’t see them for a couple weeks. I wondered if they had moved away. Then one day they walked back in. I looked at them and asked “So?” He gave a big smile and lifted his ring cladden hand into the air and wiggled his fingers back and forth. “We don’t need anything today, we just wanted to stop in and show you”. I told them how happy I was for them and gave them a congratulatory fist bump on their way out.
The second beautiful part of this story is the marriage itself. In our community, and many lower income communities, marriage is a rarity, especially in the younger generation. Cohabitation, common-law marriage, single households with children who have a variety of parents. It makes sense to most from a financial perspective, as the options for benefits are better. But it has robbed our community of the amazing gift of marriage. True marriage, not just a legally recognized one, but one that is birthed through God. It is not in the person of the Father, the Son, or the Spirit where the ultimate power is held, but the omnipotence of God is in the relationship between the Trinity, the Love in the Trinity. That same Love joins man and woman into one flesh. Creates the bond that holds them together. The very thing that transforms their relationship from earthly to spiritual.
Our community has been lied to about and robbed of the power of marriage. It is a generational curse passed down over time that does nothing but weaken families of their full potential. So it is beautiful when we get to see it happen and be a small part of it.
