Every Little Thing is Gonna be Alright...

Every Little Thing is Gonna be Alright...

When nothing seems to be going right, when chaos seems to surround you every step you take, when you seem stuck in a rut. Where does your mind go, what do you do to get things back on track again. A lot of times when things seem to be getting too chaotic around Love City, whether it is issues in the neighborhood or feeling like there is not enough time in a day, the famous phrase “every little thing is gonna be alright” tends to pop up.

Last year the phrase became a sort of mantra for Shawn’s 8th grade class. When emotions were running high or students were feeling overwhelmed, they would come back to that phrase. Oftentimes if you would walk by the classroom you would be able to hear the phrase as Bob Marley sang it in Three Little Birds. It would be playing softly in the background as student’s completed their work, soaking them in the idea that everything really was going to be alright. That no matter what, God would work whatever was going on for their good if they would let Him. And while the phrase may have been made most famous by Bob Marley, it has an ancient past.

We see the same concept of every little thing being alright in scripture. In the middle of the sermon on the mount, the speech that Jesus gave introducing people to the Kingdom of God, Jesus tells us not to be anxious, not to worry. That the birds don’t have grocery stores or warehouses but still every day they get enough food to live because God provides. That the flowers in the field have no closets or shops, yet still God clothes them with beautiful colors. If God does that with flowers and birds, how much more will he do to take care of His children? The point that Jesus makes is that when we live in the Will of God, in the Kingdom, then anxiousness and fear will fade, and the paradigm you are seeing through will be shifted to one of confidence and abundance. Yet, we all still have days where we feel it more challenging to stay in that mindset rather than one of anxiousness; having a community, a class, a school that has adopted that mantra is encouraging.

There is nothing as comforting as being reminded to stay in that mindset, especially when it is a child that reminds us. When a child who you know has every reason in the world to believe everything is not going to be alright, can look at you and speak the truth. When you can see the culture that you are creating, take a hold on the next generation and to have sunk in. When you can see the fruit of the tree and get a taste of what is to come.  There is still a lot of work to do in our community to bring a restored future, but we are helping to set mindsets that know, no matter what, when you live in God’s will, every little thing is gonna be alright.
