Picture Day...

Picture Day…

It is a day with fans and haters. A day that brings smiles to some and dread to others. A day that, through wars, depressions, and the rise of smartphones has remained a tradition in schools across the nation: picture day. There is nothing like seeing kids dressed up, little girls with bows in their hair, boys bringing a change of clothes to get out of whatever collared shirt their mom stuffed them into, and the middle schooler who has to toe the line between looking good and not looking like they tried too hard. It is a day seared into most of our memories and that has a timeless relatability. All this for an image of you to be produced. As I observed the picture day festivities going on I couldn’t stop thinking about that word, Image.

Images have been around as long as humans. Cave paintings show images of animals, statues show images of gods and kings, famous artists painted pictures of any who could afford their fees.  People want to look their best, and have that seemingly immortalized so all people throughout history can remember them the way they wanted to be remembered. While today there is photoshop and filters, there are plenty of examples throughout history of kings and queens having their image altered to portray them more favorably. An image is supposed to capture you, whether that is doctoring you up or just capturing you candidly, an image should be identifiable as its subject. Perhaps past experiences with picture days or group photos is what makes it so hard for people to grasp that they were made to be God’s image.

It is our identity, given to us upon our creation, mankind created to be God’s image, the ones to represent Him. A creation that was created to encapsulate God’s Love, mercy, and ultimate goodness and to represent God among the rest of creation. A creation that still has the ability to be those things, and is still called to represent those things to the world today. We want images of us to present us in the best possible way, it is hard for me to believe that God would want anything less of His images. Being His image bearers is an honor that we often overlook.

At MOA we are lucky because we get to teach kids how to show Love, mercy, and every other quality of God, to the world. We get to comfort the kids who are terrified that their hair didn’t turn out right or that they didn’t look good in their picture. We can help to put in perspective for them that as exciting as picture day can be, they are the true images, the ones that matter. The way they handle themselves and interact with the world will be the only thing that matters in the long run. They, like all of us, get the honor of being the image of Love in the world every day. Hopefully one day we will get them all into the mindset that, if you really think about it, every day is Picture Day.
