God... from Kindergarten to Fourth Grade

God... from Kindergarten to Fourth Grade

At Mighty Oak, we teach our students about God through Love. We do not have any hermeneutical or theological curriculum or assessments, so I wanted to share some conversations I had this week with our students.  I interviewed one student from each grade and asked them what they know about God and Love, this week I will share the responses of our Kindergarten to Fourth Graders. These responses have been lightly edited by me for clarity in writing, but they are our students' words.

Kindergarten:
What do you know about God?

“He protects us. He is in heaven. Everyone prays with him, and talks to him. Jesus Loves us.”

What does Love mean to you?

“You like them a lot. I love my Mom and Dad and brothers. I like going to the lego store with my Mom. Do you like Legos Mr. Ethan?”

Second Grader:

What do you know about God?

“God is up in the sky.”

What does Love mean to you?

“What family does, it feels good, and safe. I Love my family and my dogs.”

Third Grader:

What do you know about God?

“He died on the cross for everybody’s sins. Always Love Jesus.”

What does Love mean to you?

“Being really kind to others. I Love Jesus, my Nana and my family and everybody that works at Love City. I love playing sports with them too.”

Fourth Grader:

What do you know about God?

“God Loves you. God died on the cross and rose from the dead. He saved us when he was beaten and died. Christmas celebrates his birthday. He helped a man named Noah build a big boat to save animals.”

What does Love mean to you?

“Like an example, my Mom loves me and she takes me places and hugs me and takes care of me. I Love her and my family and everybody at the school”

First Grader:

What do you know about God?

“He blesses us, protects us, and has mercy on a lot of people. He is good. He Loves us, we are like His family.”

What does Love mean to you?

“It means I forge a strong relationship with someone. It makes you feel welcomed. Me and my Mom, like, we Love each other. When you Love someone you make sacrifices for them. I would do anything for my Mom. I also think I may love my girlfriend, she goes to a different school now though so we don’t, like, see each other or talk anymore so that is kind of hard. I also Love to hang out with Ms. Hannah (one of his teachers) because I know she loves me and I like the way I feel around her. What do you think Love is Mr. Ethan?”

“I think you did a great job summing it up, I think the way you think about it changes as you get older, but I think sacrifice is definitely a part of it. I think it is hardest to love people when those people don’t love themselves, but it can be hard loving yourself sometimes.”

“Yeah it is hard sometimes, but it helps when you have people around you that Love you.

“That’s true, I believe that the hardest person to Love in the entire world will always be ourselves, but the more we do, the better we are able to Love others.”

“Oooh yeah, that’s good, I like that” (nods head and wags finger in agreement).

It is beautiful to see what God has already revealed about himself with some of our younger students. Next week, I will share the responses of our Fifth through Eighth Graders.
