Just Follow…

I think people may not understand how community driven Love City is. Not only is everything we do based on what our community needs, but we also will pivot at a moment’s notice if those needs change. We have done it before with food distribution during CoVid, with the creation of Mighty Oak Academy in the fallout of NTI in our neighborhood, but also in smaller moments. It is one of the things that I love most about our community, and we get to experience another one of those pivots today.

Portland is a very tight knit community that looks after one another. When we saw one of our neighbors had a Go Fund Me put up by one of their family members to help cover unexpected medical expenses, we felt we needed to help out somehow. Shannon Garcia and her family have deep roots in Portland, and have supported Love City from the beginning with their encouragement and by showing up to countless Fish Fry’s and events. With all the support they have given us over the years, we felt we needed to do something to support her family with unexpected medical expenses. So we have decided to turn this week’s Fish Fry into a fundraiser for her, with all proceeds and donations given to help support her. An opportunity for the community to get a good meal and show their love and support of Shannon at the same time.

We were talking to some friends of ours from the neighborhood parish who heard what we were doing, and they said something that stood out to me, that they were jealous that we were able to follow the Spirit when it moved. There were no corporate or clerical hoops that needed to be jumped through to get approval to help a neighbor. There were no brand guidelines or stipulations that prevented us from being able to help. A community need arose, the Spirit moved, we just followed. That is called Church, being the body of Christ. Moving as we are directed to move. It is no different than when the Church in Acts comes together to give their possessions up for distribution among the whole camp, or when Paul calls upon communities to raise money for other communities in need in his letters. We have the opportunity to give the community a space to help contribute to a beloved family in this neighborhood.

Shannon and her husband

We are blessed to be able to provide a space for the community to have the opportunity to help one another. We are excited to see how the community will show up today. We would love to see you at the Fish Fry today partnering with and supporting our community at this moment. If you are not able to stop by today but would still like to help support Shannon you can donate directly to her page here. We hope to see you on this beautiful day.
