Miracles Still Happen

Miracles Still Happen

One thing that I have learned over the years at Love City is that community has many different aspects, and it is multi layered.  We may think of community as one thing, but then see it in places we wouldn’t initially have expected.  There have been many times when I have been so focused on our community, that I’ve missed the fact that those that are called to join our mission are a part of our community also.  They give of themselves, are dedicated to the people both in the neighborhood and at Love City, and often the miracles they see in their lives are just as important and impactful as the miracles we see in our neighborhood.  This week we had a miracle in our community, it was with one of our staff members at Mighty Oak Academy, and that miracle overflowed to encourage not just me, or our staff, but our students and our neighbors as well.  And since we view all of you, as our neighbors in this journey as well, I wanted to share that miracle with you all.

One of our staff members had recently been having to go back to the doctor for multiple tests for what the doctors suspected might be cancer.  She had a few rounds of tests and biopsies and was told that there was a suspicious mass that the doctor wanted to perform a small surgery to remove.  On Wednesday she went to the doctor’s office, mentally prepared for them to cut out the mass and do further tests to see what might be a larger issue of cancer.  She arrived, and they prepped her for surgery.  Before the surgeon came in to do the procedure the nurse wanted to do one more scan to make sure the mass was in the place they thought it was.  The nurse did the scan and peered at the image on the screen.  Then started asking questions, confirming her date of birth, her address, to ensure she had the right patient.  She called in another nurse to look at the images, that nurse also peered at the screen and asked the same questions.  They called in a third nurse to look at the image.  She too peered back and forth between the old scan that showed the mass and the new image they had just taken.  Finally, they called in the doctor, who performed all the same checks and questions as the nurses.  “Well,” the doctor said, “you can get up off the table, we won’t be operating today, because that mass is gone.”  The nurses all gathered around, squeezing her hand, giving her hugs, that the  mass was gone! She jumped up off the table and told the nurses, “I prayed for that mass to be removed!”  She had goosebumps all over and felt like she was on fire.

As she was driving home from the doctor’s office, she called me to tell me the story.  It had been one of those days for us at Love City.  Every so often we get a day that I like to call pile on days.  We had had one thing after another come up, nothing serious, but just little fires popping up all day, so when she called to let me know how it went, I was eager for some good news.  I never expected it to be that good news story though. Over our years here we have seen many miracles, whether they are financial, or physical, we’ve seen a little bit of everything, I shouldn’t be surprised when I hear about miracles.  The added blessing this time though, was Shawn and I weren’t the first witness to this miracle.  Shawn and I have seen miracles that have strengthened our faith, some only we have seen, but this miracle shows me the growth of the community, the miracles aren’t just to strengthen our faith anymore, they are to strengthen to faith of our team, our students, our families, and our community.

We are grateful for all aspects of our community, and to see miracles happen where we aren’t the only or first witnesses to it, just shows me how much the community has grown and deepened over the years.  I fully expect to hear about more miracles in our community in the future.
