Neighbors being Stewards...

Neighbors being Stewards...

At Love City, we know that we are just stewards of God’s resources. Nothing that we ‘own’ personally, or as an organization, is really ours.  We just watch over it, use it when God tells us to, and use it for who God tells us to.  While this is a big principle in Love City that we strive to live by, it is really encouraging when we see the community living the same way, and we have gotten to see a couple of those instances just in the past week.

The stretch of school between Winter Break and Mid-Winter Break is one that can be difficult for students. It is cold and dark outside for most of the day, their recesses and PE classes all move indoors, and we can see them slowly lose steam. When Shawn started to notice this in the 8th graders last week he planned some outdoor volunteering for them at the beginning of this week. Thrilled with the nice weather and to be outside, the kids were happy to rake leaves and clean up yards. While they were out in front of St. Cecilia working, one of our neighbors pulled up and when they saw what was going on they asked “Can I just buy the kids some drinks from the store, is that ok?” Shortly she returned with drinks for all the kids, thanking them for their hard work.

One of our most loyal Fish Fry customers, Mr. Dave, comes in at the same time every Friday night, 6:30. A couple of weeks ago, he came in and was deliberating over getting a brownie. By the time he gets there every night, there are usually only one or two brownies remaining, typically the runts of the litter that got cut just a bit smaller than the rest. He picked up the last remaining brownie and turned it in his hand, inspected it, looked at the price, thought about it, and then put it back in the basket. He did this a few times, not able to pull the trigger and pay for the brownie that wasn’t the large, middle piece that everyone wants, before finally plopping down on the pew and waiting for the rest of his order. When his food came out, I felt like I should get the brownie for him and tell him it was because we loved and appreciated him. Then, last Friday came around.

We try to not regularly give out free meals to people, it is not what God has called us to do and there are plenty of places in our neighborhood that do give out free meals. Occasionally, someone will be passing through and we will have a little bit of work for them to do so they can get a meal that way, or I will pay for a meal for them. But, for the most part, our neighbors know that giving out free food is not what our mission is. Last Friday, a man came in at the end of the night and was looking for free food, and he wanted a brownie. Mr. Dave was sitting waiting for his order, and before I even had a chance to respond, he jumped up and said that he would pay for the brownie and chip in on the man’s food. He remembered that brownie I had given to him and wanted to pass it on.

It is beautiful to see our neighbors wanting to share what God has given to them with others. Accepting that the things that have been given to them are really His, to be used for His will, to help bless and encourage others. These are moments we look forward to and that encourage our spirits to see.
