Restoring the Kingdom...

Restoring the Kingdom…

This week we got the opportunity for volunteer groups to come through and learn from and serve at Love City helping us with some of the projects that we have going on. Volunteers have always been a part of Love City’s story, helping us to restore our neighborhood. This week we got two groups from Arkansas of middle and high school students on their spring break. What we always have believed with our volunteer groups is that we want to give them an experience of what it is like to serve Jesus, no matter what that looks like, to wake up and say yes to whatever he has in His Will. Even though that may not always look like what they think.

In Harry Potter there is what is called the Room of Requirement. It is a magical room that will appear when someone is in need of something and in the movies it is a room packed full of miscellaneous items. Over the years, Love City has received many generous donations of items to help us in our programs, and as the things we do have continued to change some of these items weren’t able to be used anymore. For example, we have hundreds of prom dresses from when we used to do a formal dance with girls from the neighborhood and the First Division Police officers. Once Covid happened we were no longer able to do this event and so all of the prom dresses went to our ‘Room of Requirement’ which is the upstairs of our restaurant. Over the years we have gotten much better about only saying “yes” to donated items that we know we can use, but also in that time our storage area has been packed full. Looking towards the future, we know that this space will need to be utilized for our high school.

The volunteers this week helped us clean that entire space out, carrying hundreds of items to a new staging area where they can be sent to where they will be utilized or sold. For them this may have seemed just like carrying a bunch of objects to a different building and cleaning up a storage area, but when you actually look at the Kingdom impact you see that what they really did was to help us start to build out a high school that will help to create lifelong learners and break generational curses that keep the families in our community from living freely in the Kingdom. The same thing that is said in Isaiah 60:10 where foreigners will come to help restore the land and rebuild the walls, we have people from outside of our community coming to help us restore the community to the way it has always been intended to be.

The space that will be converted into the future high school.

This can be a hard perspective for people to see, especially as a highschool student. To understand that waking up and saying “yes” to whatever Jesus has planned means you may get your hands dirty, you may do something that nobody will recognize, you may do something mundane, but what you are really doing by saying “yes” is an act of Worship helping to restore God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. It is what I fell in love with nine years ago at my first Love City experience and it is what I love getting to show students when they come to spend time with us. I always pray that it will resonate with their Spirits and plant seeds for their future. It is my greatest hope that they see that they are helping to restore the Kingdom in ways that will be felt for generations.
