Spring Time…
Time changes, beautiful weather, spring cleaning; despite Spring not officially beginning until next week we have been blessed with an early week of spring weather giving us all a boost of energy. This weather brings with it renewed activity around the neighborhood, neighbors emerging from their hibernation and getting back out to greet one another. This weather also brings some beautiful changes all around Love City.
There is nothing worse as a kid than being in class, staring out the window, knowing how good the weather feels outside. Daydreaming about the kickball or gaga ball you could be playing, just counting the minutes until you are free to go outside again, being in a state of learning the least of your priorities. It has been awesome to see our teachers at Mighty Oak adapt to this seasonal issue by taking classes outside. If you drive past the school after lunch time you are likely to see a school surrounded by kids, each class claiming their own spot for instruction, at times encircling the entire building. It is the way education should be, adapting to the needs of students, changing environments, stimulating students with fresh air. Using nature as a second teacher. This week provided our classes many opportunities to make it outside. It also provided an opportunity for us to get some outside work done.
Our Fourth/Fifth Grade Class enjoying some Outdoor Instructional Time
This week we were able to make big strides getting cleaned up all around our buildings and getting exciting work done to prepare our seedlings to be transplanted into the greenhouses. First we got two outdoor frost-free faucets put in to allow for more control on how much water the plants are getting. Then we got a fence put up behind the Porkland Greenhouse, this fence will aim to lessen people breaking in, and help to keep unwanted critters at bay. Finally, we got new windows put into our outdoor kitchen building. This room will give us a dedicated place to start seedlings and wash produce that is coming out of the Love Grows Farm. A building that was built in 1950 to fry fish and serve it to customers outdoors will once again be cranking out food for the neighborhood. The windows will allow sufficient lighting for seedlings and let visitors get a view into the process behind their food. The final exciting development that has come with this beautiful time of year is the season of lent.
New windows being put into our Outdoor Kitchen Building
The season of lent began last Wednesday, and with this comes the tradition of Friday Fish Frys. While we do Fish Frys year round, Lent always adds a fun boost. Packed dining rooms, nonstop orders, and unbelievable conversations always take place. It is the best time to get to see so much of the community getting together. Whether you grew up with this tradition or you are craving a break from tradition with some Churched up Tots, we look forward to seeing you on this beautiful day.
