Thanksgiving 2024…
Yesterday we got to celebrate Thanksgiving at Mighty Oak before the school went on their holiday break. This year we decided to have a more intimate meal and instead of doing the whole school at once, we did one class at a time. Parents were allowed to attend lunch with their children and sit down and enjoy a meal with them. We were blessed to have Lou Lou in Middletown provide the food as well as many helping hands from their team to serve food to our families.
With plates full of turkey, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, the students were smiling from the moment they walked in, but the best moments were when they saw their families come around the corner. The look on their face when they saw someone they could share the meal with is priceless, especially for the parents who kept it a secret that they were going to come. Students who didn’t have someone that was able to make it still got to have a great time meeting a new friend as some of the helpers we had serving food were able to sit down and connect with them. But by far the most beautiful thing I got to see was the trust present in the community.
In every group of lunches, from Kindergarten to High School there were families that came in who had babies with them. And when they came in they were eager to let our team hold the babies. They made sure to ask everyone that was there helping if they wanted to hold the baby. And it happened over and over and over again with multiple families. They were trusting their babies with our team. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me since they already trust us with their students in our care, but for some reason seeing them so willing to entrust their newborns into our care made that trust tangible in a new way for me. It encouraged me a lot that the culture that is being cultivated in Mighty Oak is creating such a strong community.
This culture is one that I pray we continue to foster well. One that excites me for the future of students coming into Mighty Oak, and families that are staying for longevity and that we are getting to know more and more every year. An atmosphere that families walk into and feel at ease, that they feel a comfort and trust in. A team that has become more than just a school staff, but has become their community. And that is something to really be thankful for.
